Hold Today's Practice Before Endless Knowledge
There are many books to read and many theories to learn in the world. Even Buddhist sutras and the stories of Seon masters are endless, and modern tools can unfold all that material even more quickly. Yet human time and strength are limited.
Encountering much knowledge can be helpful. But if we keep chasing endless materials, we may miss the practice we need to do today. We do not have to know everything before beginning mind practice.
Practice begins with one step we can hold right now. Examining the mind once today, speaking one good word today, and noticing greed and anger once today can become a more direct study than distant theories.
Knowledge is like a map that shows the direction. A map is needed, but we cannot reach the destination merely by collecting maps. At some point, we must close the book and actually walk the road in front of us.
Today, before looking for more material, decide on one thing you will practice now. Even within the endless sea of knowledge, today's small practice makes the path of practice clear.
There is endlessly much to learn, but our time and strength are limited. Knowledge can become a map, yet practice begins with one step we actually take today.
