Good Things Return Within the Flow of Change
When difficult times continue, the mind easily feels blocked and helpless. It can seem as if good things will never return, and as if the present hardship will go on without end.
Yet all phenomena are not permanent. When rain falls, it eventually stops, and even a dark night brightens as time passes. Seen through the Buddha's teaching, the world is not fixed; it keeps changing without cease.
When elders tell us to endure and hold steady even when things are a little hard, there is wisdom gained from life in those words. Even when it seems only bad things are continuing, the flow changes, and within that change good connections and opportunities arise again.
Holding steady does not mean simply forcing ourselves to bear everything. It means doing today's work, caring for the mind so it does not collapse, and not letting go of the thread of hope. When we pass through a day in that way, the next door can open.
If your mind is dark today, remember that this hardship too will change. Even when it seems good things will not happen, they arise again. This can be a time to endure well and protect the ember of the mind.
Hard times do not last forever. Because everything changes, dark times also pass and good things return. Today, hold steady without collapsing and protect the ember of hope.
