When We Unfold One Sentence at a Time, Merit Becomes Fragrant
When we look at different Buddhist teachings, the heart of study often has much in common. Yet there are many ways to enter that path. Some explanations come close to us easily, while some teachings, mixed with classical Chinese and deep terms, can feel very difficult.
When we meet a difficult sentence, it is easy to pass over it. But a word of practice or scripture contains a meaning far deeper than its plain definition. So instead of simply turning the page, we need the kind of study that holds one sentence, one word, and slowly unfolds it.
The monk taught through the image of a fragrant offering, the fragrant meal. Like a fragrant offering received by a practitioner endowed with merit rather than an ordinary meal, merit formed through right study and practice does not easily disappear.
Even if we have not fully completed the five kinds of merit, what matters is the mind that knows them and tries to cultivate them. As we learn and practice qualities such as precepts, meditative stability, and wisdom, blessings do not merely appear on the surface for a moment and vanish; they deepen within life.
Today, even when you meet a difficult teaching, do not be afraid. Unfold it one sentence at a time. Even if you do not understand the whole meaning, the sincere mind that studies and practices builds merit. That merit can become a blessing that makes you and those around you fragrant.
Difficult Buddhist terms and classical Chinese sentences can feel overwhelming at first. Yet one word and one sentence can hold deep meaning, so we study by unfolding them slowly. The effort to cultivate the five kinds of merit becomes a blessing that does not easily disappear and makes life fragrant.
