Offerings Are Digested Through Practice

2025 . 12 . 03

There is another point to consider after yesterday's teaching on the fragrant meal of the Fragrant Accumulation Buddha Land. When we eat rice, the body digests it, and when we are ill, we take medicine. Medicine, too, can be said to be digested only when it has done its work and fulfilled its role.

A fragrant offering can be understood in a similar way. Receiving an offering does not automatically make it merit. Only when the person who receives it practices rightly and turns the received kindness back into the strength of practice is it truly digested.

In the deep meaning of scripture, this points to a high state such as complete awakening or the stage of a bodhisattva one lifetime away from Buddhahood. In other words, the fragrant meal is not food to be enjoyed casually; it is an offering that a practitioner walking toward awakening must fully bear and digest.

Therefore, a practitioner must not remain at being served. Without using offerings and kindness lightly, we must cultivate ourselves through precepts, diligence, and wisdom, and transform what we have received into merit within our own life.

Today, reflect on the help and kindness you have received. Do not consume them as something obvious. Make them strength for living more rightly and practicing more deeply. When we do so, the offerings we have received are digested into merit that brightens life.

Blessings and offerings we receive are not simply to be enjoyed; when digested through right practice, they become merit that brightens life.

Receiving an offering does not automatically become merit. Just as food and medicine must be properly digested in the body, kindness and offerings we receive are digested when they are turned toward right practice and the path of awakening. Do not use what you have received as a matter of course; with diligence and wisdom, make it become merit.
