The Root of Aspiration Should Reach Toward Everyone
Today's teaching begins by looking at where my aspiration is directed. We want many things, but if that wish remains only with my satisfaction, consumption, and sensory pleasure, the mind can eventually become narrower.
Deep aspiration gains strength from the wish to go beyond my own benefit, help many people, and benefit the community. Such aspiration is not simple desire; it becomes the direction and energy of life.
The monk saw that what gives meaning even until the final moment of life is not only outward achievement. More important than what was accomplished is with what kind of mind we tried to accomplish it, and whom that work helped.
If the root of aspiration lies in self-centered desire, even fulfillment can feel empty. But if that root reaches compassion and benefit, even a small action gives rise to lasting strength.
Today, look at whether what you hope for is only for yourself, or whether it can become a lamp that brightens someone. Aspiration directed toward everyone sets the day's direction rightly.
Aspiration easily narrows when it remains only with my own satisfaction. Aspiration that comes from the wish to benefit everyone becomes the direction of life and a lasting strength.
