A Clear Mind Is the Target of Steadiness
The Vimalakirti Sutra teaches that when the mind is clear, that very place is a clear world. A clear mind is the ground where wisdom arises, and the place from which we move toward awakening.
Through meditation and practice, we try to steady the mind. But when we look into the mind, thoughts keep arising and disappearing. At times, worry may also arise about when we will be able to steady the mind, or when awakening will come.
At such times, the needed answer is to keep making effort without giving up. Just as an archer does not hit the target by shooting only once or twice, the study of the mind ripens through repetition and steady practice.
We should not step back because it does not happen quickly. As we notice a little more today, look into the mind again tomorrow, and practice diligently, the mind gradually becomes settled and clear.
Today, release one more arrow toward the target of the mind. Within steady effort, a clear mind grows, and within that mind, wisdom and happiness also bloom.
A clear mind is the ground of wisdom and awakening. When we look into the mind, many thoughts and worries arise, but like an archer who reaches the target through endless practice, we too should continue practice without giving up. Even when it does not happen quickly, if we keep noticing and steadying the mind, the mind gradually becomes clear, and happiness grows there too.
