The Body Where Merit Gathers into the Dharma Body

Today's teaching begins with the meaning of Dongji, the winter solstice, and reflection on the body. Dongji is the turning day when the night is longest and, afterward, the days gradually become longer. Just as light begins to grow again from the place where darkness has been long, our lives can also change anew according to the direction in which we gather the mind.

The monk said we can reflect on the meaning of the word body as something gathered. The body is not only matter made of flesh and bone; it is a place formed by many conditions coming together. More deeply, according to the stages of practice, what is gathered as merit can also be seen as body.

Therefore, our body changes according to how we use it. If we gather bad habits and greed, it hardens in that direction. If we gather wholesome karma, practice, and a good heart, it becomes a precious body. When we cultivate body and mind and accumulate merit, this body becomes more than a simple physical body; it becomes a vessel that carries the Dharma.

The Dharma body is not a distant word. Today's one word, today's small good deed, today's repentance and prayer, and today's practice gather to form the body of Dharma. Just as, on Dongji, people turn away from harmful energy and greet new light, we should walk the path of brightening ourselves by gathering merit every day.

Today, look at what you are filling this body with. You can gather complaint and greed, or you can gather a wholesome heart and practice. When even small merit is accumulated day by day, body and mind become more precious, and life naturally moves in a brighter direction.
