Do Not Repay Hatred with Hatred
We should not repay hatred with hatred. Just as dust thrown against the wind comes back to us, when we meet others with an angry mind, that hatred eventually returns to us as well.
Using the mind rightly does not happen by itself. Compassion and wisdom are needed for the mind to move rightly, and that compassion and wisdom grow within the practice of looking into the mind at every moment.
A good mind creates good conditions, and a hateful mind calls forth hatred again. Therefore, today too, before first looking at what is wrong outside, we should first look at what color our own mind is moving with.
Governing the mind is itself practice. Today, may we choose understanding instead of hatred, and compassion instead of anger.
If we repay hatred with hatred, that hatred returns to us again. A good mind creates good conditions, and an angry mind calls forth more suffering. Today, may we look carefully at our own mind and meet people with compassion and wisdom.
