Let Go of the Rigid Line That Divides Us

2026 . 08 . 03

There is no seam in open space that forever divides ‘my side’ from ‘your side.’ Mountains, trees, and people each stand in different forms, yet none exists alone outside relationship. Air and light, words and labor, care and choices move among us and together shape the life we live now.

To say that awakening is not separate from the entire Dharma realm does not mean erasing every difference. We should respect the distinct lives and responsibilities of self and others while letting go of the insistence that we are completely cut off from one another. My words and actions reach other people, and the conditions in which other beings live affect my life in return.

The Huayan teaching that mind, Buddha, and sentient beings are not three fixed, separate entities shows how the movements of mind and world meet one another. The mind interprets the world; that interpretation becomes words and actions; and those actions change the conditions of other beings. Those changes return to us, so awakening is not knowledge kept to oneself but wisdom revealed within relationship.

A mind like open space clearly reflects every phenomenon without clinging to any one of them. When joy comes, it knows joy; when difficulty comes, it attends to the difficulty. Yet it does not harden a passing emotion or judgment into an eternal truth. Because it does not cling, it does not become indifferent; it can see more widely and respond more fittingly.

Letting go of divisive judgment must not be mistaken for erasing good and evil, responsibility, or boundaries that protect safety. Harmful conduct should be stopped clearly, and necessary distance should be kept. Practice is to avoid hating a person's whole being because of one wrongdoing, or pushing someone outside the Dharma realm simply because they differ from our standards.

When your mind feels blocked, look at the next scene your intended words and actions will create. Consider how this one remark may touch another person's heart and next choice, and what burden your chosen convenience may leave on other people and the environment. Follow the path of an action you thought ended with you, and previously unseen relationships will come into view.

Awakening is not a special realm far away, but an unobstructed mind that sees connection rightly here and now. Keep necessary differences and protective boundaries, while turning back the rigid taking of sides that blocks every path between us. Even a boundary that once served as a wall of separation can become a guide for opening a passage through which responsibility and care may move.

Today, notice whom your actions touch, and offer one kind response.

Awakening is not anyone's private possession, but the wisdom that sees one Dharma realm in which self and world continually affect each other. This does not mean erasing differences and responsibilities; it means releasing the insistence that we are completely disconnected. Today, notice where your actions reach and choose a response that sustains relationship.

Rigid divisions hide one another's circumstances.
The same light reaches even the places divided apart.
Though forms differ, our lives touch one another.
Keep the differences, and open a way through.
Knowing our connection, we respond more responsibly.
