Awakening Must Be Directly Realized to Be Known

2026 . 05 . 09

Awakening is not completed by explanation alone. Even if we read many books and hear good Dharma talks, if those words are not verified in our own mind and life, they still remain someone else's words.

No matter how carefully someone explains the taste of honey, we cannot fully know it unless we taste it ourselves. The Dharma is the same. Words and writing are precious skillful means that show the direction, but only when we examine and embody the place they point to does it become true knowing.

During practice, we may experience a special light or feeling. But if we immediately grasp it as awakening, it becomes another misunderstanding. What matters is an attitude of verifying directly in the mind-ground of daily life, without staying in words such as seeing or not seeing.

What matters in this teaching is not forcing the mind to look better or trying to change it all at once. First, notice where the mind is caught right now, and from that very place choose one step in a more upright direction. Practice is not a special event far away; it appears in the expressions, words, judgments, and care of the day.

I will verify the Dharma I have heard in my life.

Awakening cannot be known by words alone. I will verify the Dharma I have heard in my life. Today too, may this teaching become a small choice in daily life and brighten the mind.
