Buddha Nature Is Revealed Through Practice

2026 . 07 . 09

When people speak of Buddha nature, it can be easy to understand it as though something is already hidden inside us. That way of speaking can sometimes give strength to practice. We need faith that anyone can awaken, otherwise the path can feel impossible. But if that faith hardens into the thought, "I possess an unchanging substance," it moves away from the Buddhist meaning of no-self and dependent arising.

The heart of today's teaching is to see this difference carefully. Buddha nature should not be grasped like atman or treated as something owned. It is better understood as the possibility of awakening that becomes clear when practice and conditions meet rightly. Through study, watching the mind, and releasing attachment, wisdom arises. The precious point is that this wisdom can arise, not that a finished thing is already stored inside the body.

Think of brush practice. A living stroke is not a hidden object inside the brush. Paper, ink, breath, the strength of the hand, and repeated practice meet, and then one clear stroke appears. To say "anyone can write" does not mean the completed writing is already inside the brush. It means that, by training correctly, anyone can bring forth a clear stroke.

Practice is the same. Awakening is not a treasure we pull out from within. It is a path revealed as we cultivate the mind, learn the Dharma, and continue awareness moment by moment. Faith in Buddha nature is therefore not vague self-confidence. It is the strength not to abandon the practice that must be done today.

There are two things to be careful about. One is remaining in the thought, "I already have it," and becoming loose in actual practice. The other is deciding, "I have nothing," and losing the path. The teaching of Buddha nature goes beyond both extremes. It tells us that anyone can open the path of awakening through effort and conditions.

Buddha nature is not a possession; it is a path revealed through practice.

Buddha nature is not something we possess like a hidden object inside us. Believe that anyone can awaken, but understand that this possibility is revealed through practice and conditions. Today, rather than grasping it in words, begin one practice you can actually do.
